Probably illegal. Most especially illegal if they say it’s been here since before 2014/15.

If it was imported illegally they’ll still crush.

Foreign vehicles not eligible for import until they are 25 years old cannot be grandfathered in once they are stateside. Any vehicle in the US before it is 25 years old is still subject to repossession and crushing, as it was imported illegally.

ETA: Emphasis added for clarification only. Cars that came here before their time are still fair-game, and it would suck if someone reading this post bought that Land Rover and had it taken.

If you actually want the car, here’s the real ad. Those CL ads just used the pics. No defender that nice goes for $12k, certainly not in an ad like that.

Interesting. So you can’t say sneak in an R34, hide it for a few years, and then register it once over 25 years old? Various schemes I had no interest in RUINED.

You can, but if the Feds find out they will have the ability to grab and smash it.

Although I don’t know if you can’t store it on a container vessel that is docked in the US for a few years.

Just out of interest, do you know what the law would be if you took the vehicle out of the country and re-imported it?

I do not know. I didn’t read anything addressing that question. I would assume there’s some minimum period during which the car cannot be in the US (probably a year). It could also be from the date of first importation, e.g. R34 arrives 02/2012, leaves 04/2012, and comes back on 03/2025 it may still not be legal. I wouldn’t suggest it though, as I’m sure if the Feds can find out the car was previously in the US illegally they will not welcome it back.

Well, it’s purely hypothetical given that I don’t live in the US :)

I just wondered whether there’s some profit to be made buying up cars that were imported too soon, paying low prices because they’re illegal, and then getting proper paperwork (and so full whack) for them just by taking them to Canada on a daytrip or some such.

The only profit to be made that way would be convincing the existing owners that their car is illegal and for a low price you’ll take the illegal goods off their hands, and then turn around and sell said car to some dummy for a tidy sum, telling them “it’s over 25 years old, so you can import them now”.

Are we even sure that the truck is real and actually for sale, and the poster didn’t take pictures from someone else’s website and throw up a vaguely worded ad to trick people into signing up for a credit monitoring service or something?
